Exchange rates API without a key

Short answer. Frankfurter serves European Central Bank reference rates with no key: https://api.frankfurter.app/latest?from=USD&to=EUR. ECB rates are daily, published around 16:00 CET on business days.

Details

  • Only currencies the ECB publishes (about 30). No crypto, no intraday.
  • Weekend and holiday dates return the previous business day's rate.
  • For historical central-bank rates in other jurisdictions use the FRED series (DEXUSEU, etc.).

Pitfalls

  • Reference rates are not tradable rates; retail conversions include spreads.
  • Record the rate date, not the fetch date, when citing.
